1978:Americans Ben Abruzzo, Maxie Anderson and Larry Newman make the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by balloon aboard the helium-filled Double Eagle II, flying from Maine to France in six days.


1943: The Allied conquest of Sicily is completed when Gen. George S. Patton and the U.S. 7th Army arrive at Messina, Italy, followed closely by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery’s British 8th Army.
