World Humanitarian Day, 19 August, supports humanitarian work and recognizes the contributions and sacrifices made by aid workers. The International Day of Peace, 21 September, promotes peace-building and encourages individuals, organizations, and nations to undertake practical acts of peace.
Peace and conflict prevention/resolution is one of The Rotary Foundation’s areas of focus, which reflect critical humanitarian issues and needs that Rotary clubs are addressing worldwide. Here are a few suggestions for ways Rotary clubs can support this important area:
• Support a peer mediation and conflict resolution curriculum in local elementary schools, along with activities that reinforce skills that promote peace.
• Provide training for community leaders in mediation and alternative dispute resolution.
• Offer job training to youth affected by conflict.
• Sponsor a scholar studying international peace and conflict resolution who wants to work in a community affected by conflict.
