TODAY IN HISTORY

AUGUST 20
1960:The first space travelers return safely to Earth aboard Sputnik 5, as the Soviet Union recovers the dogs Belka and Strelka, 40 mice and two rats that had spent a day in orbit. The mission paves the way for the first human space flight less than eight months later.

1938: Lou Gehrig hits the 23rd grand slam of his career in Philadelphia. He has been the all-time leader in Major League grand slams ever since.

1964: President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 as part of his administration’s Great Society legislative agenda. The EOA is the driving force behind the creation of VISTA, Job Corps, Head Start and numerous other programs of the War on Poverty.
