1963:Earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science, James Meredith becomes the first African American to graduate from the University of Mississippi. White rioters and Mississippi Gov. Ross Barnett had sought to block his admission the previous September.

1587: Virginia Dare is born in Roanoke Island, N. C. She is the first child born in America of English parents.

1920: After 70 years of struggle by female suffragists, women are guaranteed the right to vote when Tennessee becomes the 36th state to ratify 19th Amendment to the Constitution.
