1954:Milwaukee Braves slugger Eddie Mathews swings on the cover of Time Inc.’s first issue of Sports Illustrated.

1829: Conjoined twins Chang and Eng arrive in Boston from Siam (modern-day Thailand) to be exhibited to the Western world, later giving rise to the term “Siamese twins.” Chang and Eng eventually adopt the last name Bunker, become successful businessmen and marry two sisters.

1896: George Carmack, Skookum Jim Mason and Dawson Charlie discover gold nuggets while fishing in a tributary of Canada’s Klondike River, according to popular legend. Their discovery inspires “Klondike fever” as thousands of hopeful miners, including author Jack London, travel to the Yukon Territory in the last great western gold rush.
