1945:Japanese Emperor Hirohito announces his nation’s unconditional surrender on the radio as the Allies proclaim “V-J Day.” It’s Aug. 15 in Japan; Aug. 14 in the Western Hemisphere.

1057: Providing the historical inspiration for William Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth, the murderous King Macbeth of Scotland is killed by Malcolm Canmore, the son of King Duncan I, at the Battle of Lumphanan.

1969: The Woodstock Music and Art Fair opens on the site of Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in upstate New York, attracting 32 musical acts and roughly a half million people to the three-day counterculture festival.
