1944:Representatives from the United States, Great Britain, China and the Soviet Union meet for the Dumbarton Oaks Conference in Washington, D.C., to outline the creation of the international organization that will become the United Nations.

1858: Abraham Lincoln and Illinois Sen. Stephen Douglas take part in the first of seven debates about the spread of slavery during the contest for Douglas’s seat. Although Lincoln ultimately loses the Senate race, he attracts national attention and wins the presidency in 1860—beating three other candidates, including Douglas.

1959: President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially proclaims Hawaii as the 50th state and unveils a new 50-star American flag.
