TODAY IN HISTORY

AUGUST 8
1968:Promising to bring an “honorable end” to American involvement in the Vietnam War, Richard M. Nixon and Spiro T. Agnew are nominated as candidates for president and vice president at the Republican National Convention in Miami.

1973: Vice President Agnew vehemently denies accepting kickbacks in exchange for awarding government contracts during his term as governor of Maryland. Although he calls the reports of bribery and income tax evasion “damned lies,” he will resign on Oct. 10 and be replaced by Gerald Ford.

1974: President Nixon announces that he will “resign the presidency effective at noon tomorrow.” Faced with impeachment and possibly conviction by Congress over his role in the Watergate scandal, Nixon becomes the only U.S. president to step down from office.
