AUGUST 5
1957:Dick Clark’s American Bandstand debuts on ABC, featuring Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Whole Lotta Shaking Goin’ On” and a very excited teenage studio audience. Clark continues to host the show until it leaves ABC in 1989.

1861: The United States’ first income tax goes into effect when President Abraham Lincoln signs the Revenue Act. The 3 percent tax on annual incomes greater than $800 helps fund the Union Army in the Civil War.

1981: President Ronald Reagan begins firing 11,359 air traffic controllers who had gone on strike to demand higher pay and a shorter work week, disregarding the president’s warning that the strike was illegal
