JULY 26
1990:President George H.W. Bush signs the Americans With Disabilities Act into law, prohibiting discrimination against individuals based on physical or mental handicaps.

1775: The forerunner of the United States Postal Service is established by the Second Continental Congress at the suggestion of Benjamin Franklin, its first postmaster general. The improved mail system is crucial in uniting the colonies during the Revolutionary War.

1947: President Harry S. Truman signs the National Security Act, unifying the armed forces for the first time under the Department of Defense and creating the National Security Council and the Central Intelligence Agency.
