1984:Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya becomes the first woman to walk in space.

1909: French aviator and inventor Louis Blériot makes the first airplane flight across the English Channel, piloting the Blériot XI monoplane from Calais to Dover in 37 minutes.

1978: Louise Brown is born in Manchester, England, becoming the first “test tube baby” conceived by in vitro fertilization.
