1936:Francisco Franco flies to Morocco to lead Nationalist rebels against Spain’s leftist Republican government as the Spanish Civil War begins.

1940: President Franklin D. Roosevelt is nominated for an unprecedented third term at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

1976: Fourteen-year-old Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci is the first to score a perfect 10 in the Olympics, eventually taking home five medals—three of them gold—from the Winter Games in Montreal.
