JULY 20
1881: Chief Sitting Bull, spiritual leader of the Sioux resistance to the United States’ seizure of native lands, surrenders to federal troops at Fort Buford, N.D.

1917: The first numbers are drawn in Washington, D.C., in the World War I draft lottery, calling up thousands of American men to serve in Europe.

1969: Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin take a giant leap for mankind, becoming the first men to walk on the moon after Apollo 11’s lunar module touches down on the Sea of Tranquility.
