1918:Russian Czar Nicholas II, his family and several members of their household are shot to death by Bolsheviks in the basement of a house in Ekaterinberg, marking the end of the centuries-old Romanov dynasty.

1955: Walt Disney’s imaginative vision comes to life when Disneyland opens in Anaheim, Calif. The amusement park spans more than 160 acres of former orange groves and costs $17 million.
