1973:Former White House aide Alexander Butterfield drops a bombshell before the Senate Watergate Committee, revealing the existence of secret tapes that could implicate President Richard Nixon in the political scandal’s cover-up.

1769: Father Junipero Serra founds Mission San Diego de Alcalá, the first Catholic mission in the Alta California region of New Spain. The outpost eventually becomes the modern city of San Diego.

1957: John Glenn, a major in the Marine Corps, sets a transcontinental speed record, flying across the United States in 3 hours, 23 minutes, and 8.4 seconds in a Vought F8U Crusader supersonic jet.
