1984:Geraldine Ferraro is selected for the vice presidential spot by Democratic presidential nominee Walter Mondale, making her the first woman to run on the ticket of a major party.

1862: President Abraham Lincoln signs a congressional resolution creating the Medal of Honor to recognize members of the U.S. military who have risked their lives in combat beyond the call of duty. More than 3,400 men and one woman have received the nation’s highest military honor.

1962: The Rolling Stones perform in concert for the first time, playing an 18-song set at London’s Marquee Club
