1991:Boris Yeltsin takes the oath of office, beginning his term as the first popularly elected president in the history of Russia.

1925: The “Monkey Trial” of high school science teacher John Thomas Scopes begins in Dayton, Tenn. Scopes, accused of violating a Tennessee state law by teaching evolution, is at the center of one of the most famous trials in U.S. history, featuring defense attorney Clarence Darrow and prosecutor William Jennings Bryan.

1940: Nazi forces attack the United Kingdom by air, beginning the Battle of Britain. By September, the German Luftwaffe will be decisively repelled by the Royal Air Force, ensuring that Adolf Hitler never launches Operation Sea Lion, his planned invasion of Great Britain.
