1853:Commodore Matthew Perry and a squadron of four ships arrive in Edo (Tokyo) Bay, seeking to open diplomatic and trade relations between isolationist Japan and the United States.

1776: The Liberty Bell summons Philadelphia citizens to the Pennsylvania State House for the first public reading of the newly printed Declaration of Independence by Col. John Nixon.

1950: President Harry Truman designates Gen. Douglas MacArthur to lead the combined United Nations forces aiding South Korea.
