1948:The Cleveland Indians sign pitcher Satchel Paige, the first Negro League player elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Signed on his 42nd birthday, Paige is Major League Baseball’s oldest rookie.

1865: Four of John Wilkes Booth’s co-conspirators are hanged in Washington, D.C., in connection with the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Among them is Mary Surratt, the first woman executed by the federal government.

1928
– The Chillicothe Baking Company in Chillicothe, Missouri, US, first produced sliced bread, advertised as "the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped", which then led to the popular phrase "the greatest thing since sliced bread".
