JULY 3
1863:After three days of fighting and more than 50,000 casualties, the Battle of Gettysburg concludes in a pivotal victory for the Union Army and a crushing defeat for the Confederate invasion of the North.

1608: Explorer Samuel de Champlain founds the city of Quebec as a permanent French settlement on the Saint Lawrence River.

1971: At the age of 27, lead singer Jim Morrison of the Doors dies in Paris of heart failure. Exactly two years earlier, another 27-year-old rock star, Brian Jones, guitarist and founder of the Rolling Stones, drowned in his swimming pool in Sussex, England.
