JULY 2
1839:Joseph Cinque leads over 50 African captives in a revolt aboard the slave ship Amistad, killing the ship’s captain and attempting to sail back to Africa.

1937: Amelia Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, are reported missing near Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean as they attempt the first around-the-world flight over the equator. They are never heard from again.

1964: President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the landmark Civil Rights Act prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, religion or nationality in employment and education and outlawing the segregation of public facilities.
