1885:Louis Pasteur successfully inoculates his first patient with the rabies vaccine, treating a 9-year-old boy bitten by a rabid dog.

1917: T.E. Lawrence, widely known as Lawrence of Arabia, leads Arab troops in the capture of Aqaba, a key Jordanian port belonging to the Ottoman Empire, on behalf of the Allies in World War I.

1957: Althea Gibson defeats fellow American Darlene Hard to become the first African American to win a Wimbledon singles title.
