JUNE 24
1995:With President Nelson Mandela in attendance, South Africa defeats New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup finals in Johannesburg, the first major sporting event held in South Africa after the end of apartheid.

1314: Fighting for independence from England, Scottish forces under Robert the Bruce win a decisive victory at the Battle of Bannockburn.

1948: The Soviet Union blocks all road and rail traffic in and out of West Berlin, cutting off the Western Allies’ access to the city.
