1961:Ballet star Rudolph Nureyev defects from the Soviet Union, seeking political asylum at Le Bourget airport as the Kirov Opera Ballet Company prepares to depart after its run in Paris.

1858: Referring to the divisive issue of slavery’s expansion into the western territories, Senate candidate Abraham Lincoln proclaims at the Illinois Republican Convention that “a house divided against itself cannot stand.”

1963: Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, launches into orbit aboard Vostok 6.
