1885:The Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France, arrives in New York Harbor in 300 pieces packed in 214 crates aboard the Isère.

1775: Colonial militias lose the Battle of Bunker Hill (mostly fought on Breed’s Hill) to the British, yet demonstrate their ability to stand up to regular army troops, boosting the colonists’ morale in the early days of the American Revolution.

1972: Five burglars, later found to be working for President Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign, are arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington.
