1815:Napoleon Bonaparte and his army are defeated at the Battle of Waterloo by British and Prussian troops under the command of the Duke of Wellington and Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher.

1812: President James Madison signs a declaration of war against Great Britain, beginning the War of 1812.

1983: Twenty years and two days after the Soviet Union’s first female cosmonaut blasted into orbit, Sally Ride becomes the first American woman in space when she and four other astronauts lift off in the space shuttle Challenger.
