TODAY IN HISTORY

JUNE 22
1938:In a rematch bout symbolizing the struggle between democracy and fascism, American boxer Joe Louis knocks out German Max Schmeling in 2 minutes, 4 seconds into the first round at Yankee Stadium. The fight was broadcast on radio around the world.

1944: President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs the GI Bill of Rights, granting benefits such as unemployment compensation, low-interest loans and funding for education to returning veterans of World War II.

1945: The long and bloody Battle of Okinawa ends in a Japanese defeat as organized fighting ends. Mop up operations against scattered troops will last another two weeks.
