HOT COFFEE, GOOD. HOT POT, NOT.

How about a little kitchen fire with your morning cup of joe? After getting 83 reports of coffeemakers overheating, smoking, melting, burning or catching fire, the Consumer Product Safety Commission today announced the recall of 900,000 General Electric coffeemakers sold at Walmart. Three of the incidents included minor burn injuries to consumer’s hands, feet or torso. There were also reports of property damage including a significant kitchen fire and damage to countertops, cabinets and a wall. Not a good way to start the day.

The recall involves GE-branded 12-cup coffeemakers sold in white or black. Consumer Reports recently tested one of the recalled models (169164) but did not observe this safety hazard in the samples in our labs. We did, however, find that there are better choices.

The coffeemakers were sold at Walmart stores nationwide from March 2008 through January 2010 for about $30. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled coffeemakers and return them to any Walmart for a full refund. For more information, contact Walmart at (800) 925-6278  or visit the firm’s website at www.walmart.com.
