1775:George Washington is unanimously appointed commander in chief of the Continental Army by the Second Continental Congress.

1215: King John signs the Magna Carta at Runnymede, England, binding the king to respect the privileges of English barons and the freedom of the church.

1844: Charles Goodyear is granted a patent for vulcanization, a method to strengthen rubber.
