JUNE 5, 1947

Secretary of State George C. Marshall outlines the Marshall Plan, calling for American financial assistance to the crippled economies of postwar Europe.

1967: Following a buildup of Arab military forces on its borders, Israel preemptively attacks Egypt, beginning the Six Day War.

1968: Sirhan Sirhan mortally wounds Sen. Robert F. Kennedy moments after Kennedy declares victory in the California presidential primary. Football star Rosey Grier wrests the gun away from Sirhan.
