1692:Bridget Bishop, the first colonist in Salem, Mass., executed for allegedly practicing witchcraft, is hanged.

1898: U.S. Marines land at Guantánamo Bay, as the United States continues to demand Cuban self-rule and the withdrawal of Spanish forces.

1977: James Earl Ray, convicted for murder in the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., escapes from prison. He and six others are apprehended three days later.
