JUNE 9
1973:Secretariat, ridden by jockey Ron Turcotte, wins the Belmont Stakes by a record 31 lengths, becoming the first horse to win the Triple Crown in 25 years.

1954: During Senate hearings on the alleged infiltration of communists into the U.S. Army, special counsel Joseph Welch stuns Sen. Joseph McCarthy, famously asking the “red scare” fomenter, “Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?”

1969: Warren Burger is confirmed by the Senate as chief justice of the Supreme Court, replacing the retiring Earl Warren.
