1980:Fifty-seven people are killed when Mount St. Helens erupts in Washington state. The force of the blast equals 500 atomic bombs.

1896:
The Supreme Court rules in Plessy v. Ferguson that “separate but equal” facilities are constitutional. The decision is overturned 58 years later.

1933: President Franklin Roosevelt signs legislation creating the Tennessee Valley Authority.
