The Library of Congress was founded in 1800. It was designed to be the research arm of Congress. The public can visit, but only government officials can check out material.
The Library of Congress has a copy of all media published in the United States. Its collection currently contains more than 21 million books. Altogether, over 141 million works of all types are housed there.
With advances in technology, that information is starting to go online. The Library is steadily beefing up its digital collections. These are freely available on its Web site.
