It was 30 years ago, on May 18, 1980, that Washington’s Mount St. Helens blew her top – killing 57 people and scattering ash over 11 states, in what would become the most deadly and economically destructive volcanic eruption in US history. The morning began with an earthquake, occurring at 8:32am, that weakened the north face of the mountain significantly and caused an explosion of lava and pulverized rock that sent a column of smoke and ash an astounding 80,000 feet into the sky.
