1968:Mike Wallace and Harry Reasoner host the first broadcast of the television newsmagazine 60 Minutes, created by producer Don Hewitt for CBS. The first episode of the show features segments about the upcoming presidential election and an interview with Attorney General Ramsey Clark on police brutality. Since then, the top-rated 60 Minutes has won more than 80 Emmys.

1938: Don Budge defeats Gene Mako, his doubles partner and fellow American, to win the U.S. Open in Forest Hills, N.Y. Budge's win over Mako completes the first tennis Grand Slam within a single calendar year — Budge had already won the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon.

1960: Bertha Franke, wife of the secretary of the Navy, officiates the launch of the USS Enterprise in Newport News, Va. The Enterprise is the first fully nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and now the oldest active ship in the U.S. Navy.
