The most prized tea in China is Da Hong Pao, or ‘The Big Red Robe’
comes from the famed Wu Yi mountains. It’s so rare that at one point
only 1kg of this tea was produced in one year. Its sublime taste
commands an asking price of tens of thousands to millions of dollars per
kilogram. When President Nixon visited China in 1972, he was given 50g as a gift.
His anger brewing, it was explained to him that this was half of
China’s reserves at the time and was worth, in today’s money, about
$250,000.
