TODAY IN HISTORY

SEPTEMBER 23
1779:Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones famously declares, "I have not yet begun to fight," defiantly commanding the heavily damaged American warship Bonhomme Richard to victory against the British warships Serapis and Countess of Scarborough in an engagement off of the southern English coast.

1938: A time capsule created by the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company is buried deep underground beneath Flushing Meadows Park, the site of the 1939 New York World's Fair, with instructions to be opened five millennia later, in 6939. The capsule contains dozens of objects representing 20th-century civilization, including a microfilm roll, textiles, seeds, cigarettes and a copy of Life magazine. The capsule also includes messages from physicists Albert Einstein and Robert Andrews Millikan and writer Thomas Mann.

1952: Rocky Marciano wins the heavyweight boxing championship, knocking out Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13th round. Marciano will be the only heavyweight champion to retire without a single loss or draw in his professional career.
