1992:The space shuttle Endeavour makes several historic firsts as it lifts off from Cape Canaveral, Fla. Among the crew are Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space; Mamoru Mohri, the first Japanese astronaut to fly on the space shuttle; and Mark Lee and N. Jan Davis, the first married couple in space.

1977: South African black student leader Steve Biko dies after being beaten and tortured in Pretoria Central Prison. Authorities wrongly announce that the death of the anti-apartheid activist came as the result of a hunger strike, an attempt to distort the reality of his brutal murder.

1984: University of North Carolina basketball star Michael Jordan, chosen as the Chicago Bulls' No. 1 draft pick, signs a seven-year contract to play for the Bulls in the NBA.
