1971:More than 1,000 prisoners seize control of maximum-security Attica Correctional Facility near Buffalo, N.Y. For the next four days, they will lay siege to D Yard of the prison, demanding better living conditions and holding prison guards hostage. Forty-three people will ultimately die in the ensuing violence, most of them inmates killed when state troopers storm the prison yard.

1956: Elvis "The Pelvis" Presley sings "Don't Be Cruel," "Hound Dog," "Love Me Tender" and "Ready Teddy" in the first of his three appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. Fifty-four million viewers, nearly 83 percent of the U.S. television audience, tune in to CBS to watch.

1963: The giant panda Li Li gives birth to a cub named Ming Ming at the Beijing Zoo. Ming Ming is the first panda born and bred in captivity.
