1971:Leonard Bernstein's Mass
premieres as part of the opening of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center
for the Performing Arts, better known as the Kennedy Center, in
Washington, D.C. Mass, a thought-provoking piece of musical theater based around the Roman Catholic liturgy, was commissioned by former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy.
1935: Sen. Huey P. Long is shot, allegedly by physician Carl
Weiss, at the Louisiana state Capitol in Baton Rouge. The controversial
populist leader, nicknamed the "Kingfish," dies two days later.
2001: Venus Williams, 21, beats younger sister Serena, 19,
in the final of the U.S. Open, defending her title with a score of 6-2,
6-4 in the first women's final aired on prime-time television. Venus
and Serena are the first siblings to compete in a tennis Grand Slam
final since the 1884 Wimbledon final between Maud and Lillian Watson.
The Williams sisters will meet again in the 2002 U.S. Open final, in
which Serena takes the title from Venus.
