1991:At age 51, Harry Gant breaks his own record to become the oldest driver to win a NASCAR event, winning the Winston 500 ahead of runner-up Darrell Waltrip at Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Ala.

1954: British athlete and medical student Roger Bannister runs a mile in 3:59.4, breaking the formidable 4-minute mark for the first time at a track meet in Oxford, England.

1957: Three years before his election as U.S. president, Sen. John F. Kennedy is awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Biography for his book Profiles in Courage, describing the inspiring acts of bravery of eight historic U.S. senators.
