1873:Jacob W. Davis of Reno, Nev., receives a patent on behalf of himself and Levi Strauss & Co. of San Francisco to create a copper-riveted work pant then called “waist overalls,” which will soon become Levi’s famous blue jeans.

1916: “Boy With a Baby Carriage” is the first of artist Norman Rockwell’s paintings to be featured on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. In the classic illustration, two boys in baseball uniforms laugh at their unlucky friend, a boy dressed in his Sunday suit and pushing a baby carriage.

1932: Aviator Amelia Earhart takes off from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, bound for Ireland on the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean piloted by a woman.
