1977:Using homemade hand clamps, George Willig scales the outside of the World Trade Center’s South Tower in New York, where he is promptly arrested after a 3½ hour climb. Willig will be fined $1.10 for his daredevil escapade—a penny for each of the skyscraper’s 110 floors.

1897: Bram Stoker’s Gothic novel Dracula, recounting the tale of the vampire Count Dracula, goes on sale in bookshops in London.

1994: Michael Jackson, the “King of Pop,” marries Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of Elvis Presley, “the King of Rock and Roll,” in the Dominican Republic. Their marriage will last only 19 months.
