1900:Sgt. William Harvey Carney is awarded the Medal of Honor, 37 years after he courageously planted the Union flag at Fort Wagner, on Morris Island, S.C., while fighting with the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. Carney is the 21st African American recipient of the nation's highest military honor, but his actions preceded those of any other black recipient. The battle was the climax of the movie Glory.

1701: The legendary William Kidd, better known as the privateer Captain Kidd, is hanged for piracy at Execution Dock in London.

1934: After a string of bank robberies and killings, the infamous yet charismatic couple Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow are shot to death in a stolen Ford V8 by police in an ambush in Bienville Parish, La.
