1963:The Kenya Africa National Union party wins Kenya’s first general election, allowing national founding father Jomo Kenyatta to become the country’s first prime minister and, after Kenyan independence six months later, its first president.

1950: Frank Sinatra makes his television debut on the Bob Hope special The Star-Spangled Revue, singing “Come Rain or Come Shine.”

1995: Actor Christopher Reeves, best known for playing the Man of Steel in four Superman films, is paralyzed from the neck down after being thrown from his horse, Buck, while jumping in an equestrian event in Culpeper, Va.
