1937:Atlanta newspaper columnist Margaret Mitchell receives the Pulitzer Prize for her acclaimed novel, Gone With the Wind.

1810: English poet Lord Byron swims across the Hellespont in Turkey, a stretch of water connecting the Aegean and Black seas, to emulate a journey made famous by the Greek legend of Leander.

1986: At age 54, famed jockey Willie Shoemaker wins his fourth Kentucky Derby, riding the horse Ferdinand to become the oldest winner of the prestigious race.
