1930:Ellen Church becomes the first airline stewardess as she works a Boeing Air Transport flight from San Francisco to Cheyenne, Wyo.

1940: The first McDonald’s restaurant opens in San Bernardino, Calif.

1965: President Lyndon Johnson tells Congress “We shall overcome” as he demands legislation to end voter discrimination.

1972: Alabama Gov. George Wallace is shot and permanently paralyzed while campaigning in Maryland for the Democratic presidential nomination.
