JANUARY 23

1849:Elizabeth Blackwell becomes the first woman in America to receive a medical degree.

1968: The 82-member crew of the USS Pueblo is seized by North Korea, which claims the ship was on a spying mission. The crew is not freed until late December.


1977: Roots, Alex Haley’s novel-turned-TV miniseries, debuts on ABC. Over 100 million Americans tune in for the final episode.
