1981:Just as Ronald Reagan is sworn in as president, 52 Americans held hostage in Iran for 444 days are finally set free.

1801: John Marshall is appointed chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

1961: John F. Kennedy is inaugurated as the youngest elected president. He urges Americans to “ask what you can do for your country.”
